While it may be hard to find happiness in the face of war, Star Wars does a great job of giving such fulfilling and happy moments that make up for all the tragedies. While I personally believe that Star Wars is truly a tragedy that is meant to teach young people how to deal with the hardships of real life, there are still plenty of moments that bring a smile to your face. Last week, we covered the 10 saddest moments in Star Wars history, but let's turn those frowns upside down and take a look some beautiful smiles from the Skywalker family and more.
Honorable Mentions
Naboo Victory Celebration - Everyone is happy except Qui-Gon :(
AP-5 Sings - Droids have feelings and this one is happy
Leia chooses Han - Just happy she didn't choose her brother
Boba gets his armor back - he definitely had a smile on his face the whole time
#10 - Luke finally believes
Most of these moments not only put a smile on the viewers face, but the character's as well. I absolutely love this moment because it feels like such a great full-circle one for Luke. As a young padawan in training, Luke didn't believe certain things were possible for himself. He obviously learned so much throughout his complicated existence and it made me so happy to see that he sort of let all that disbelief go and passed on everything he learned.
#9 - Falling in love
This is probably one of the most purely happy moments in Star Wars. While some people find it tough to watch the Anakin-Padme love fest in Attack of the Clones, I think it's such a great representation of how their relationship would have played out. Anakin and Padme are not supposed to fall in love. Forbidden love is sometimes the sweetest, and seeing two young people who have so much riding on their shoulders just having fun and playing together always puts a smile on my face.
#8 The Gang escapes the Death Star
They did it! Nothing is better than seeing Leia hug that walking carpet. This moment is one of those that has bittersweetness to it. After such a stressful time in the Death Star and seeing Obi-Wan's sacrifice, it's great to see a happy moment where the characters can sit back and take a deep breath. This moment really starts the camaraderie of the group and I love seeing how excited they all are.
#7 - Rey finds her place in all this
This is truly one of the most underrated scenes in Star Wars. It all led to this. While it may be in one of the sequels, I truly believe anyone who doesn't love this scene is missing the entire point of the Skywalker Saga. Blood doesn't mean family. We constantly watch aliens, humans, droids and everything in between bond and share their existence with each other. Rey was a character that really struggled to find that for herself, and I love that by the end of the trilogy she knows exactly who she is and where she belongs. #ReySkywalker
#6 - The happiest moment of his life
Revenge of the Sith is basically just a giant stab to the heart and it's moments of happiness only add to the heartbreak in the end. There is so much emotion and feeling in this scene. Padme is scared and doesn't know what to do. Anakin could have easily been just as scared. But he says it's the happiest moment of his life and that it will all work out. Whew, writing this one and really thinking it through almost made me tear up. Anakin's story is so tragic and I live for the moments where we get his see his smile.
#5 - Ben Solo is saved
Speaking of smiles, this is one that I didn't think we would get to see. I personally am very happy with the direction they took Kylo Ren in making him such a tortured and misunderstood character. You can feel his mistakes starting to get to him the moment he meets Rey and I always felt that he was destined to return to the light. It is great to see Ben smile for the first time and to see him feel like he did the right thing for once.
#4 - Obi-Wan is proud of his student
This one hurts because of how happy it is. Obi-Wan and the council are pretty hard on Anakin throughout the trilogy. Seeing Anakin finally get some validation and respect from his Master is something that everyone wanted to see. Obi-Wan's words of encouragement feel finally making your dad proud. This moment is the last time these two ever see each other as friends, which is completely tragic and happy at the same time.
#3 - Anakin wins the Boonta Eve Classic
This is another one of those just pure, happy moments. Nobody died yet, Anakin shows such promise and optimism with his courageous win in the podrace, our beloved Kitster gets more screentime. I personally always attached to young Ani as a kid, and seeing him win such a hard race made me feel like I could do anything.
#2 - The Rebels reunite
Let's not think about the millions of Imperials that just perished and just enjoy the smiles. One of my favorite moments in all of Star Wars is seeing Han jump back into battle and help Luke save the galaxy. It solidifies the bond that the group has and shows the true colors that each character has. All the way to the award ceremony, I always have a smile on my face. Especially when we get to see a newly repaired, shiny R2-D2.
#1 - Victory Celebration on Endor
YUb NUb! I think many will agree that the feeling this scene gives you is just pure joy. Anakin has been redeemed, the Rebels have beaten the Emperor, and the galaxy will live on in peace forever..... or at least for the night. Everything about this scene is happy, ewoks hugging humans, humans hugging Wookiees, Force Ghosts grooving in the background. Something about seeing our Original Trilogy characters happy will never get old.
Don't Worry, Be Happy!
Star Wars taught me that there is always a brighter tomorrow. There is nothing you can do about the loss you will face in real-life, but there is always a way to carry on and learn from tragedy. Sometimes the worst things can lead to the best, so never give up and never surrender! If you know what that line is a reference to, you win extra points for the day. Thank you for reading and May the Force be with you!
