the Mandalorian: chapter 2 review

Wow. What an episode. This series has taken a turn that I never even remotely expected it to go with the emergence of Baby Yoda (That’s what we’ll call him until we have real name). While I figured there had to be some ties to the Force, I never would have expected the ending of the first episode and the events of the entire second episode. While I don’t want to go over every detail of the episode because I’m assuming you watched it, I want to go over my thoughts on the overall quality and vibe of the show. So grab your egg and let’s talk about The Mandalorian, Chapter 2.

VIBES DUDE, JUST VIBES

The second episode continued to nail the feeling of Star Wars. Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and the rest of the Mando crew have proven that they know how to do Star Wars, and I’m very excited to have such a main source of Star Wars content fully in their hands. That being said, I do have one slight critique on this episode specifically: I felt like I was watching more of a Disney show than a Star Wars show. The first episode felt like it was pulled right from the OT, while this episode felt more like something along the lines of Star Wars: Rebels or Resistance. It doesn’t sit as perfectly with me as far as Star Wars goes, but after watching it with people who aren’t the biggest Star Wars fans, it made me realize how important it is to open this show up to a larger audience. I watched the episode with 3 people that I’m close with who aren’t fanatics, but they enjoy Star Wars, and they loved both episodes of the show. The show is doing a great job of hitting all tones of seriousness, adventure, action, humor and emotion. I can see that it will have a higher appeal to more people than just us Star Wars freaks, which is a good thing. I’ll just have to suck up my little nitpick, because I fully appreciate what they’re doing. Just not a huge fan of watching Minions in place of Jawas.

MANDO IS SAVED

My Star Wars privilege nitpicks aside, the episode was amazing. We see the Mandalorian continue to kick names and take ass, which is why a lot of viewers are there. But there’s a new side that wasn’t even hinted at in the marketing: Baby Yoda. I love the compassion that we see the main characters have towards Baby Yoda. I get huge Darth Vader vibes through the mask of the Mandalorian, somehow showcasing his emotions and compassion through the lifeless look of the mask. It feels so Star Wars every time the camera is on the Mandalorian. Baby Yoda is hitting a serious soft spot for our main character, and it has to be one of the cutest things in Star Wars (I will die for Baby Yoda). We see the Mandalorian protect the baby, and grow to care for it through the episode which was really heartwarming to see from such a great warrior. Kuiil continues to be an awesome character, and I hope we get to see him at another point in the show. The Jawas were goofy, but I guess it can’t be too far off from how those little savages must act. Seeing more of a Sandcrawler was pretty cool too. As for the BIG reveal of the episode, my literal words were, “How the F***!” As in, how in the world did that little baby just save the Mandalorian with the Force!? That’s not how the Force works! Or is it? We’re going to be seeing a side of the Force that I think goes unnoticed by a lot of fans that think the Force is a tool to be used by Jedi when they’ve had the proper training. The Force is a mystical field that shapes the way history unfolds and gives people strength when they need it most. “All is as the Force wills it.” Which means things happen that can’t be explained. The Force is in control. Hopefully it continues to guide us on an epic path towards the rest of the series.

IN CONCLUSION

I’m really loving how both episodes left me wanting more and dying for it be next Friday. I really think the TV format works well for Star Wars in the way that you can expand on things more than you could in a movie. Star Wars fans need their lore and sometimes the movies just can’t provide all the answers us Star Wars nerds need. This episode showcased an extreme flexibility as far as various tones and humor, I think benefiting viewers that are trying to get more into Star Wars. And it still had that fresh Star Wars flavor. Mm mm mmm. I’m on a Star Wars high right now.

QUESTIONS I NEED ANSWERED:

I’m so interested to see how Baby Yoda came to be, and how his presence will affect the rest of the show. Is he clone of Yoda? Or just the same species?

Are we going to see Kuiil again?

Will the Mandalorian give up Baby Yoda? Or will his morals tell him to act differently?

When will we finally see Cara Dune?

Is the galaxy more peaceful since the revolution?

Bounty Hunting is a complicated profession, don’t you agree?

Okay I’m done. Thanks for reading and May the Force be with you. And your tiny green babies.
