From being a ex-stormtrooper with a huge heart, to screaming “REY!” every 30 seconds, Finn has become a part of the Star Wars universe in unique fashion. As a huge part of the marketing for The Force Awakens, many fans suspected that Finn would end up as the main protagonist of the trilogy and many have been disappointed by the lack of Finn action in the two follow-up movies to The Force Awakens. Whether or not you enjoyed Finn’s time on screen in The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, Finn left almost every single one of us with the same question: what in the hell was he going to tell Rey in TROS? This question wasn’t answered in the movie and it left many fans dissatisfied with the way the character was handled. However, director J.J. Abrams has the explanation everybody is looking for.
FINN is FORCE-SENSITIVE.
That’s right. While we didn’t get to hear him say it on-screen, this is what he wanted to tell Rey according to The Rise of Skywalker director, J.J. Abrams. During a screening for the movie in December of 2019, J.J. told one fan that Finn wanted to tell Rey that he was force-sensitive. While this may come as a surprise to some, and as a cop-out explanation to others, there have been hints at this explanation throughout the entire trilogy. Not only do these hints come in a subtle fashion, it might surprise you how obvious these hints are! Let’s take a look at some of the examples of Finn using the Force in the Sequel Trilogy.
Finn overcomes brainwashing and is sensed by Kylo Ren
Finn starts out as FN-2187, a brainwashed stormtrooper that has been bred to kill. In our first interaction with the character, we see him sense something greater during a battle against innocent villagers. He immediately realizes what he was doing was wrong and lays down his weapon. Shortly after, we see him make eye contact with Kylo Ren, who senses a disturbance in the Force around the Stormtrooper and later, immediately knows that he is the stormtrooper who is trying to escape with Poe Dameron.
Finn feels "as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced."
As the Hosnian System meets it’s end, we see the faces of the soon-to-be planet dust individuals as the red lasers from Starkiller Base engulf their entire planet. As this happens and before the majority of residents at Maz’s Castle notice, we see Finn look up to the sky and see the planet’s exploding. You can almost hear voices screaming as well, as if Finn could hear them as well. This alludes back to when Obi-Wan sensed the destruction of Alderaan in A New Hope.
Finn used a lightsaber with confidence and skill
While you don’t really need to be a Jedi to use a lightsaber, there’s a clear difference between being able to turn it on and cut something open, and swinging that thing around like you’re fighting battle droids in the heat of the Clone Wars. Finn picks up the lightsaber and has an immediate affinity for it. Not many non-force sensitive beings have done that in canon.
He sensed Kylo Ren on Pasaana
In The Rise of Skywalker, there are a few moments where Finn seems to sense something. But there actual moments where he physically says or does something that indicates his connection to the Force. While on Pasaana and separated from Rey, Poe inquires about why Rey would go alone and without having talked to Rey, Finn knows the answer. He senses Kylo Ren.
Finn sensed Rey’s “Death”
This was not only a very deep moment, it really solidifies Finn’s connection to the Force with no explanation needed. As Rey drops her lightsaber and falls to her death, Finn boards the Falcon but stops in his tracks as he senses the death of his friend. Finn immediately feels the power and loss of the situation on the ground of Exegol and his connection to the Force is clear. Finn is Force-Sensitive and he's pretty strong with it!
Other characters with the Force in Star Wars
Not that any other characters have anything to do with Finn, but many fans still don’t realize that you don’t need to be trained as a Jedi or Sith to have a connection to the Force. Although we’ve seen signs that you don’t need to be trained to use the Force since the Original Trilogy (Leia in ESB when she talks to Luke through the Force), many fans have been appalled at the abilities of some characters that aren’t Jedi. Characters such as Maz Kanata, Chirrut Imwe, Mother Talzin, and Bendu are all examples of beings that have no affiliation or training from Jedi or Sith, but feel a strong connection to the Force and can use it. Again while this is no new idea in Star Wars, Lucasfilm has really showcased this idea since The Force Awakens and it has become more of a thing for non-Jedi or Sith to use the Force.
Will Finn be a Jedi?
With the future for characters like Finn, Rey and Poe Dameron being unclear, many wonder if we will ever get to the see the true power of Finn’s force-connection fully showcased. The Rise of Skywalker leaves us with the idea that Rey might continue the Jedi legacy and train others in the Force. So will we ever see Finn as a Jedi? I sure hope so, and it’s up to us fans to encourage this story to come to be! Lucasfilm really does listen to the fans and we might be able to pull more stories form the Sequel Trilogy with enough FORCE. As always, let’s spread the love for Star Wars and try to shape it in the best way possible. Thanks for reading and May the Force be with you!
