Yesterday, Lucasfilm and EA revealed the trailer for an exciting, new Star Wars video game titled, Star Wars: Squadrons. While this game and news is fairly unexpected by most fans, others are getting exactly what they want with a smaller, more focused game, compared to Star Wars: Battlefront II which basically serves as a multiplayer Star Wars shooter game with not enough playable characters. EA set out to make the overall biggest and best game with as many options and features as possible with Battlefront II, but many fans believe they fell short by not including some key characters, locations, and starships. With the recent success of Jedi: Fallen Order, a game that solely focuses on one story and includes no online-multiplayer feature, EA may have realized they needed to set the expectation a little bit lower and focus on certain aspects of Star Wars with each game, instead of trying to do it all in one. All that being said, Star Wars: Squadrons is a fast-paced flight combat/simulator game that has ignited the past love many fans had for games such as “Rogue Leader” and “Rogue Squadron.” There is sure to be more information on gameplay and specifics of the game at EA Play Live this week on June 18th, but let’s take a look at everything we know about Star Wars: Squadrons so far…
The Basics
Star Wars: Squadrons is a single and multiplayer video game that will be available on for PS4, Xbox ONE, PC platforms and on the Steam and Origin streaming services. Players are able to step inside the cockpit of their favorite New Republic or Imperial starfighter as an ace pilot. They’ll plan skirmishes with their squadron in the briefing room before taking off to space battles across the galaxy. Players will engage in strategic 5v5 multiplayer space battles with the goal of demolishing the opposing flagship in Fleet Battles and feel the rush of first-person multiplayer combat as they work with their squadron and execute the best tactics to defeat as many opponents as possible in Dogfights. Pilots will triumph as a team, adjusting the composition of their squadrons to suit their playstyles as they progress, crushing their opponents and completing objectives across known and never-before-seen locations, including the gas giant of Yavin Prime and the shattered moon of Galitan (from StarWars.com). The game will be VR compatible for PS4 and PC, and will also be HOTAS compatible for people that want the real authentic flying experience. Players will also be able to play cross-platform, connecting PS4, Xbox, and PC players regardless of the pnline platform they play on. Overall, Star Wars: Squadrons is aiming to be the most immersive and customizable space battle game of all-time.
The Campaign
Not only will players be allowed to make their own character and customize different starfighters to play with their friends, Squadrons also comes with a story mode that is sure to catch the spirit of Star Wars. Yesterday’s trailer already exhibited cameos from fan-favorite characters like, Hera Syndulla and Wedge Antilles, suggesting that their will be more cameos throughout the game. The story of the campaign follows the events of Return of the Jedi and the destruction of the second Death Star. From alternating perspectives of two customizable charatcters, one from the New Republic’s Vangaurd Squadron and one from the Empire’s Titan Squadron, players will get to experience the aftermath of the Rebellion’s fight against the Empire and gain insight to what both sides must have been feeling. The campaign is sure to be exciting and full of Star Wars feels. Personally, I haven’t been more excited for a campaign story since the original Battlefront II in 2005.
Customization
As previously mentioned, there will be a ton of customizable features in the game. From creating your own pilots with options for outfits, gear and species, to customizing the look and specs of your very own starfighter, there is something for everybody to identify with in the game. This not only gives players the chance to be a part of the Star Wars universe on the sides of the New Republic or Empire, but allows them to make their own character and feel like a part of the universe themselves. Customization has always been a fan-favorite feature of many Star Wars games, so it’s a huge benefit for the game to have so many options. Start thinking about your new Star Wars identities now!
Important Dates and Information
Star Wars Squadrons is available now for pre-order and is set to release on October 2nd for the platforms listed above. EA Access and Origin Access members will be allowed to play the game for up to 10 hours upon launch and will be offered a 10% discount on the purchase of the game. The retail price of the game is $39.99, making it one of the cheapest full-release, licensed games in recent history.
In Conclusion
Here comes my opinion…..I’m so excited for this game. While nobody really asked for this game or expected it, I truly think it’s a great move to test out some different capabilities and options for Star Wars games. Star Wars fans want things to be perfect, so I think allowing for customization and different playable options is a great feature for all Star Wars games to have. I’m also excited because who doesn’t love flight battle games? They are so fast-paced and full of excitement, I can’t wait to have a modern-day rendition of games like Rogue Leader and Rogue Squadron. There’s so many possibilities for this game and I really think EA is heading in the right direction as they enter the back half of their gaming license contract with Lucasfilm. We will find out more on Thursday, but I am so ready to customize my pilot and X-Wing and get to flyin’! Thanks for reading and May the Force be with you!
