Star Wars fans were treated to an eventful day at Disney’s Investor Day 2020. There was an awesome sizzle reel for season 2 of The Mandalorian, Kathleen Kennedy made an appearance, and oh yeah THERE WAS 10 NEW STAR WARS SHOWS/MOVIES ANNOUNCED IN LIKE 10 MINUTES. While this is a lot to process, not too many details were given out about each project, and this was more of a look at the next few years in Star Wars more than anything. While some feel that this might oversaturate the franchise, we know one thing is for sure: Star Wars is alive and well. With more than 10 projects currently in development, we’re looking at a Star Wars-filled future, and that’s all we could really ask for.
The 10 Star Wars projects announced center around stories from all around the galaxy with seemingly something for each and ever fan to enjoy. Let’s take a look at the details we were given and what we could possibly expect from these exciting new projects from a galaxy far, far away.
Star Wars: Ahsoka
Star Wars: Ahsoka will be a live-action series starring Rosario Dawson as the fan-favorite Jedi-Citizen, Ahsoka Tano. The series will be set within the time period that The Mandalorian is in, leading many to believe that the series will pick up where Chapter 13 of The Mandalorian left off. No official word on the release date, but Disney has hinted that this will be released fairly soon. Dave Filoni is set to be involved.
Star Wars: Andor
Diego Luna will lead the rise of the rebellion in Star Wars: Andor. Set before the time of Rogue One: A Star Wars story (obviously), the live-action Disney+ series will center around Cassian Andor and his daring missions within the Rebellion. It is rumored that Alan Tudyk will be back as K-2SO. Set to release in 2022.
Star Wars: The Bad Batch
Set to release in 2021, Star Wars: The Bad Batch will follow-up The Clone Wars animated series with the adventures of the Bad Batch, a group of highly skilled and genetically altered clones that we’ve already seen in season 7 of The Clone Wars. The series will take place after Order 66 and assumingly see the rise of the Galactic Empire.
Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic
A new live-action series being produced by The Mandalorian creators, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. Not many details on this show have been released, but it sounds like this will be a show centered in the heart of the soldiers of the New Republic and the encounters they face as the Imperial Remnant seeks to regain power.
Star Wars: A Droid Story
Star Wars: A droid Story will be an animated special event involving everyone’s favorite droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO. Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy described this as an “epic journey that will introduce a new hero guided by our most iconic duo… on a secret mission known only to them. What could possibly go wrong?”
Star Wars: Visions
One of the most unique projects announced was Star Wars: Visions. An anime series with 10 episodes following 10 unique stories covering various characters and timelines across the Star Wars universe. Not too many details were revealed on this one, but it is sure to open Star Wars up to many anime fans.
Star Wars: Lando
In all honesty, we’re not too sure what Star Wars: Lando will have in store. Described as a Disney+ “event series,” a story centered around fan-favorite scoundrel, Lando Calrissian is being produced by Justin Simien. There is no word on a return by Donald Glover or Billy Dee Williams.
Star Wars: Acolyte
In what seems to be the first live-action story centered around the newly announced High Republic era, Leslie Headland is producing and writing Star Wars: Acolyte. This story will follow the vents toward the end of the High Republic Era and dive into the rising darkness that plagues the Jedi around 200 years before The Phantom Menace.
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
Wait, there was a Star Wars movie announced? YES. Wonder Woman director, Patty Jenkins is at the helm of a brand-new star wars movie, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. This movie will “introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy.” Rogue Squadron is set to release on December 25th, 2023.
Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi
And now the moment you’ve all been waiting for…Obi-Wan Kenobi. But forget all that, Hayden Christensen is returning as Darth Vader! You heard that right, Ewan McGregor will be starring in the new Disney+ series titled, “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” and Hayden Christensen has been revealed to be returning as Darth Vader. There’s no word on whether Anakin will be in the mix, but we can only see this as the perfect opportunity to show some flashbacks of the good ole days of Ani and Obi. We cannot wait to get more details and see where this series takes our hearts and souls.
It was a huge day for Star Wars fans, and one that we will not soon forget. Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film is still in the works as well, but no other details were revealed. Make that 11 Star Wars projects either confirmed or revealed, making this the biggest content announcement in Star Wars history. Ready or not, Star Wars is going to be at the forefront of pop culture for many years to come. We hope you as excited as we are. Thanks for reading and May the Force be with you.
